Arsenal leave Germany with the tie level after a 1–1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. It was not a dominant performance, but Kai Havertz’s late penalty gives Arsenal a platform heading back to the Emirates.
A compact Leverkusen block
Leverkusen defended in a disciplined shape for most of the match. Their aim was clear: remain compact, deny central spaces, and break quickly once possession was won.
Arsenal circulated the ball but struggled to create isolation for their wide players. Bukayo Saka rarely received the ball in the one-v-one situations that normally drive Arsenal’s attacking threat.
Viktor Gyökeres looked lively in the early stages, offering movement and physical presence up front. However, clear chances were limited as Leverkusen kept numbers behind the ball.
At the other end, Kofane’s movement caused problems for Gabriel Magalhães and ensured Leverkusen remained dangerous in transition.
Set piece setback
The second half began badly for Arsenal when Leverkusen took the lead from a set piece.
From that point Arsenal struggled to control the rhythm of the match. Unforced errors crept into possession and Leverkusen were able to maintain their defensive structure without facing sustained pressure.
Saka endured a difficult evening by his usual standards before being substituted. Timber also found advanced positions but the final ball often lacked the precision needed to break the defensive line.
Gabriel Martinelli began drifting centrally in search of space, but Leverkusen continued to defend with discipline.
Madueke changes the momentum
The game shifted when Noni Madueke entered the pitch.
Arsenal had lacked direct running against Leverkusen’s shape, but Madueke immediately began attacking defenders one-v-one. His willingness to drive at the defence forced Leverkusen deeper and stretched the structure for the first time.
That direct approach produced the decisive moment.
Madueke attacked the box and won the penalty that Kai Havertz converted calmly to level the match.
A platform for the Emirates
The result may feel slightly fortunate given the overall flow of the game, but knockout football often turns on moments rather than dominance.
Madueke provided that moment.
The 1–1 draw means Arsenal return to the Emirates with the tie balanced and everything still to play for.
